Jodhpur: The project ‘baatcheet’ has become a huge respite to the women of Chowkha village, when they got the answers to their most essential queries with regards to the habit of drug abuse of  their addicted partners. On the 15th of May 2015, considered as a significant moment by the villagers themselves, more than 35 women were called for an hour-long meeting and provided with the idea about the agenda of the workshop. Suddenly, one among them, named Parvati Devi, stood with her saree covering her face completely as per the tradition in Rajasthan and asked before Sadhvi Siddhyoga Bharti Ji, who was present there as the facilitator of the organization, “what can I do to make my husband opium free, it is very difficult to live with a drug addict partner”. It was more of her pain that was expressed rather than a question seeking for an intelligent and logical answer.

It is very difficult to live with a drug addict partner: Parvati Devi

In our patriarchal setup of the society, a woman has to bear a lot rather than just be called a wife or a spouse of a drug addict. In addition, drug abuse forces relationships suffer and depletion of financial resources, escalation of health care cost and employment cost are other additional hazards caused by this grave issue of the globe. Roles previously adopted by the drug user member, have to be taken over or substituted by the other family members – often the women partners or caregivers which in turn results into increased stress and burden.

Having to shoulder the encumbrance of being the breadwinner of the house, they even don’t know how to handle a drug addict partner and his nuisance behavior and comportments which further increases the sufferings in leaps and bounds. There, through meetings and nukkad charchas we train and educate these women on various life skill adaptations that in turn capacitate them with the ability to understand the difference between responding and reacting. With the help of these meetings, they gain knowledge, confidence and ways to manage the difficulties of life. They are motivated to come forward to register the names of their spouses for the organization's provision of de-addiction as well.
