Goddess Durga is the Shakti (energy) that powers the entire cosmos. She lends the universe the energy to create, preserve and destruct making her the mother of the universe, hence the name, ‘Ma Durga’. The word ‘Durga’ comes from ‘Durgatinashini,’ which means ‘the one who eliminates sufferings.’ Goddess Durga protects her devotees from the evils of the world.
These demons are symbolic of the evils that are present inside us and to curb them, one needs to channelize the inner energy, which is vast but often remains untapped. This process of harnessing our inner energies is referred to as ‘Shakti Jagran’, which is symbolized by the Jagrans and Chowkis that are organized to worship Goddess Durga.
