Navratri – the festival of 9-nights adorned with worship of Goddess Shakti, over the years, has been redefined by santulan, gender equality program of Divya Jyoti Jagrati Sansthan (DJJS) as an opportune occasion to fight the plight of women who are embodiments of the same shakti. With awareness drives including sensitizing pomp and show of thought provoking exhibitions, activities and demonstrations and nukkad nataks in the prominent temples of the areas; a unique target base of devotees is mobilized twice every year on Navratri towards their social responsibility in gender perspective.

Not just worship goddess durga but fight the plight of women too!

From Oct 13th-21st, 2015, plethora of DJJS centres across the nation commemorated Navratri in an exclusive view of spreading awareness about the atrocious condition of women and girls in the society. The banners with the theme “kanya pujan ke desh men kanya bhrun hatya kyu” were put in the boundaries and gates of the temples along with tall exhibitions on the same subject inside the temples where band of santulan volunteers enthusiastically enlightened masses by means of one to one counselling, emphasized on the prevalent perplexity of kanya pujan and female feticide in same society. Stress was laid on the feathers collected by women in their cap in almost every field. Nukkad nataks at awareness counters communicated the message to save girl child with pinch of satire. Skit in awareness workshop showcasing the achievements of women that failed in uplifting women's status, spellbound the viewers.

DJJS Dehradun camped for the elimination of female feticide in 8 heavy footfall temples of the town - Sanatan Dharma Mandir in Nehru Colony, Durga Mandir in Survey Chowk, Kali Mandir in Raipur, Mahamaya Durga Mandir in Ballupur, Tapkeshwar Mandir in Ghari cant, Durga Mandir in Shyampur, Radha Krishna Mandir on Rajpur road and Radha Krishna Mandir in Kishan nagar. Whereas, DJJS Meerut raised slogans in the same vein along with stupendous exhibition on gender sensitization in one of the famous malls of the area – shopprix mall on Meerut Delhi by pass road.

Ghaziabad and Karkardooma centres of the organization too conducted similar awareness drives in known temples of the periphery. While the Vishnu Garden centre of the organization preferred to walk for the cause of saving girl child on the auspicious occasion of Navratri sensitizing thousands on the roads spread over subhash nagar and tilak nagar in west Delhi. In the same vein, DJJS Aligarh commemorated the same festival through socio-cultural events in Shakuntalam Vatika of Dhanipur and Guru Ramdas Nagar Park, GT Road.

Informative pamphlets on the causes, myths and repercussions associated with female feticide were distributed to the masses. DJJS pledges to work ceaselessly until the time it gifts women with her lost dignity and self-worth, through its distinct tool of ideological empowerment.
