Nuggets of Wisdom from Zen

The word ‘Zen’ is derived from the Sanskrit word ‘Dhyana’. … Zen lays emphasis on the attainment of enlightenment through zazen (meditation) and interaction with an accomplished teacher; and, it de-emphasises mere knowledge of sutras and doctrine. …Let us gather some nuggets of wisdom from Zen this time and enrich ourselves both in our mundane as well as spiritual lives. … Do you know Why the laughing Buddha Remains Happy 24X7? Happy Chinaman… Do you know who he is? Well, it is another name of someone you have often heard about. Yes, it’s none other than the ‘Laughing Buddha’. Would you like to know the secret of his happiness, which remains alive all the time? Here it is as was revealed before a Zen student once… This Hotei lived in the T’ang dynasty. He used to walk with a big sack on his back… carrying candies, fruits, doughnuts and…   and for whom? For the little children who would surround him while playing. But, one of his acts was quite surprising. It was that whenever he met any Zen devotee, desiring to gain some wisdom from him, he would extend his hand and say, “Give me one penny.” And, he would put those pennies in his sack and distribute them as well. Once, a Zen Master approached him with utmost inquisitiveness.  He wanted to judge the height of wisdom of him. So, he asked him, “What is the significance of Zen?” T…

Fresh and Vibrant Environment in Our Hands

Pollution around us is playing havoc with the health of men, animals and plants alike. The need of the hour is to look for options in our (India’s) thousands of years old Vedic literature, and learn how our ancestors were able to preserve Mother Earth for us and in the process were able to lead a healthy life till a ripe age. Ayurveda is one of the life sciences of the Vedic Indian period. Nature has many a times been referred to as ‘Mother Nature’ in it. As a mother nurtures her child, similarly nature nurtures the earth. Nature knows how to give to humanity its health and prosperity. Let’s know how some of the plants and trees stand apart in providing vitality to everyone. REVITALISING THE ENVIRONMENT THROUGH PLANTS … Some plants are able to flourish in reduced sunlight, as their leaf-composition allows them to photosynthesise in household light. They can purify the air by absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen day and night like Peepal and Holy Basil. These plants can also eliminate significant amounts of benzene,…  Many of these plants are routinely grown in Indian homes. A list of such air filtering plants was complied during the NASA Clean Air Study to clean the air in space stations. Such plants are English Ivy, Spider plant, Rubber plant and many more… MAKING THE ENVIRONMENT FREE FROM DISEASE-PRODUCING INSECTS Insects including mosquitoes and flies are responsible for many preventable diseases. MIRACLES… Beyond the Vistas of Science

… Miracles are feats which fall beyond the methodologies, instruments and experimental apparatuses of the existing scientific methods. However, their presence, their occurrence in itself is proof of their reality. … In fact, often these miracles have been windows forcing the scientists to look beyond their existing knowledge. These windows gave way to new streams of scientific research and this is how the fields of parapsychology and consciousness-research came into being. Nonetheless, every time nature tries to unfold its secrets, it is encountered with the scientific eye of suspicion. There is nothing new about it; this has always been the case. Here are a few instances from one of the world-renowned spiritual books, Autobiography of a Yogi, by Yogananda Paramahansa, of miracles as witnessed by Mukunda (the earlier name of Yogananda). The Perfume Saint:  The saint asked Mukunda to stretch forth his right hand. There was no physical contact. The saint asked, “What perfume do you want?” Mukunda replied, “Rose”. And the very next moment, to his surprise, the charming fragrance of roses puffed from the centre of his hand. … The saint … was famous for manufacturing scents at his will. Mukunda was left astonished! “It is definitely not hypnosis; then what is it?”- thought Mukunda. Similarly, once Mukunda came across the levitating saint, the one who remained up in the air, several feet above …
