TALK LESS, Relax MORE

Take a piece of paper. Begin to write on it and fill it up. Now, again start writing on the same side of the paper, on the already written text, and write so much that there is no empty space left anywhere. Now, are you able to see what you had written on it in the first go? No. In fact, you can read nothing. Alas! You wrote so much but not a single word is readable. Similarly, throughout the day, if we talk and keep talking and continue doing that, what happens? The paper of our brain and nervous system gets so completely soaked with our talks, that its capacity to comprehend anything sensible is lost. By the end of the day, we feel completely exhausted. Then, when we want to unwind and relax or meditate, we are unable to do so. Why? Because of the law of inertia: A body in motion… Hence, when we sit down to meditate, even though the tongue is not talking, but the mind is still talking due to inertia, and so we get thoughts, thoughts and thoughts! In order to rid ourselves of the unwelcoming thoughts, we need to apply a lot of effort, and time; but we are already so exhausted that the nervous system and the brain do not have any more energy to fight these thoughts. … … If we keep stuffing our brain with anything and everything, it will be so filled in sometime that it won’t remain liveable. We would start having challenges in solving problems, in planning, in remembering important dates and events, and in fact we would start being fearful of ou…

Is Fear Dear To You?

Mice, cats, heights, insects, hospital, pearls… Guess, what is common in the entities listed above! Couldn’t? Ok, let’s expand a list somewhat more and perhaps then you will be able to crack the riddle. Mice, heights, cats, insects, hospital, pearls, boss, presentation, promotion, challenges, loss of face, deadlines… Now, could you make out the answer? Verily, an instant ‘yes’ must have erupted from the heap of past memories and the circumstances at your workplace! You must have got it right; the common feature among these otherwise disconnected entities is a four letter word- FEAR! Walt Disney, a name which is credited with the making of the well-known comic character Mickey Mouse, himself feared the mice! Gustave Eiffel, the designer of the huge Eiffel Tower, was afraid of heights! Richard Nixon, the 37th president of the U.S was awfully fearful of hospitals. A notion had seeped into his mind that if he goes to a hospital, he would never come out alive. … Julius Caesar, Napolean Bonaparte, Alexander the Great, and Benito Mussolini- all these so called big-wigs in the realm of power and valor became terrified at the very sight of cats! In 2005, a Gallop poll was conducted in the U.S to seek answer to one prime question, which perhaps bears connection with one and all in some way or the other- ‘What do you fear the most?’ …The top reasons for fear from the compiled list came out to be- terrorist attacks, …

Words Have Power!

‘Words are not simply the packets of alphabets sewn together that go out in the air and then disappear into vapour!’ True, indeed! Words have immense power! If they make their way to the heart of the listeners, they can bring a complete transformation… How? Take a look… This happened long back in Gatlinburg, Tennessee… A seminary professor was sitting with his wife in a restaurant. They had ordered breakfast and were still waiting. Meanwhile, they saw a white-haired man who went to each and every table, and greeted people with a broad smile. He approached this couple as well. With a friendly gesture, he initiated a conversation… Stranger: Hello! Where are you from? Professor: Oklahoma. Stranger: Oh I see! And, what do you do? Professor: I am a teacher in a seminary. Stranger: Great, then I have a wonderful story to share with you… (While speaking, he pulled a chair and began to narrate the story…) (Pointing to a mountain) See there… Near the base of that mountain, there lived a poor mother. She gave birth to a boy. But the boy did not know the whereabouts of his father. As such, it became very difficult for the boy because every now and then people would ask him, “Who is your dad?” This became the talk of the town. Coming across multitudes of expressions- sometimes as taunts, sometimes as sympathy- the boy started avoiding people as he became fearful of the very question. In school also, du…
