Interesting Libraries of the World!

The moment one reads ‘Interesting Libraries’, the eye-brows ascend to the third floor of the forehead, and the mind sarcastically comments, ‘What could be interesting about libraries?’ Well, dear readers, during our lifetime, each one of us must have visited a library and would have found a book that either helped us through academics, tough situations, knowledge-gathering, increasing vocabulary, or even passing some idle-time. Undoubtedly, the books housed in a library are of vital importance; but, here we share with you some libraries from world over, which are not only interesting but also an inspiration in themselves! Read on… … … PHONE BOOTH LIBRARY: A KNOWLEDGE CALL! The red phone-booths are iconic of England. When the locals in Westbury, Somerset, heard of telephone network operator’s decision to remove one from their community, they magnificently transformed it. The result of this transformation was a delightful library which was tiny, yet housed 100 books, several DVDs, CDs contributed by locals. Till date, the volunteers ensure that readers can access this library 24 hours a day. The locals of Westbury bring the books that have been read by them and swap with the ones they want to read. The movement of books is constantly tracked and the ones being read by most are donated to a local charity shop. The void so created is filled with new books. A telephone booth being replaced by a library-it’s indeed …

Empowering Women in the Real Sense! @ International Women’s Day

“The term ‘empowerment’ has emerged as a ‘development buzzword’ in current times”, quotes Makamba Online, an African business and lifestyle monthly. And most commonly, we see it surfacing in discussions and media with the prefix ‘woman’, which gives a stark gender connotation to the whole empowerment agenda. But, is the meaning of the term ‘empowerment’ restricted only to ‘women’, is a question. Ironically, the phrase ‘women empowerment’ is the brainchild of a society, which, in the first place, demeans, deprives, and subjugates its women population and later aims at alleviating them from the given sub-standard status. However, in true sense, the empowerment agenda is not restricted to women folk only; rather, it is an innate need of each and every individual who is deprived, under-rated or is subordinated or for that matter, is disabled or poor or illiterate or is vulnerable in any other capacity, being widow or addict or dejected or depressed. Immanuel Kant, the famous German philosopher, teacher, meta-physicist, and author, propounded a theory in which he laid down the expansive need for empowerment of various social fragments. According to his theory, each individual has an inborn deficit which he calls as “Nonage”. By definition, Nonage is the inability to use one’s own understanding without another’s guidance. This signature trait of Nonage keeps an individual e…

A Paradigm Shift in the Definition of Competition!

In the present times, we get to see an attitude of fierce competition in every field. Often, in the craze for snatching a higher position, competition turns into an ugly rivalry. However, the following incident from the Buddhist repositories comes as an inspiration to imbibe the spirit of healthy competition. Once, Buddha was crossing the Sal forest, along with a large group of monks. There, at a particular spot, Buddha stopped and a mysterious smile spread on his countenance. When Ananda noticed it, he, at once, asked- " O revered Master! None of your actions and gestures are without a meaning. Certainly, there is a great massage behind your divine smile. Kindly bless us O Tathagata by throwing light on the same." Buddha said, "Dear Ananda, the place where we are standing, once had one of the powerful cities existing on it, where the reverend, enlightened Kassapa dwelled. Kassapa had a lay disciple, Gavesin, who seemed to have a great influence on the people around. Walking on the lines of Gavesin, 500 people of the city were motivated to tread the path of spirituality. They also, therefore, sought the refuge of the holy Kassapa. Although Gavesin was the one who became an inspiration for these 500 people; however, the truth was that Gavesin himself did not abide by the commandments of his Master Kassapa in toto. At times, he discounted the instructions of the Master, as per his convenience. He became casual in adhering to the discipline as was guide…
