At the outset, the objective of the camp was to sensitize rural people on the significance of taking care of eyes and how it can help in avoiding preventable blindness. Judiciously these areas were selected where people were from low economic background. More specifically, the aim was to help preventable blindness in this community by screening and educating people.

Eye care statistics reveal that 15 million people in India are visually impaired and strikingly 80% of this blindness is curable. But in absence of proper and timely eye care services, people especially in rural areas continue to live in darkness. So for almost more than a decade now, DJJS ‘Aarogya’ is taking eye care services to underprivileged people living in far and distant places.

The camp was structured for four days which was first conducted for the residents of Bamuliyapur village and was then extended for the students of various government schools in Hingoni village. Well-experienced eye specialists Dr. N.C Paul from Delhi, Ms. Vandana Paul and their team examined all the patients thoroughly for eye problems with basic required instruments and equipment, which included dilation, refraction and fundus examination to some extent. Around 104 students along with 68 villagers were tested in the camp making the total of 172 beneficiaries, who were examined and treated professionally by the team of Doctors. In addition to that, vision correction spectacles were provided to the needy and the prescribed medicines were given free of cost. Patients with acute eye ailments were referred to hospitals for further investigation and treatment.

Besides eye check-up, the camp also served as a platform for dissemination of basic eye care awareness.  Dr. NC Paul sensitized locals on the daily practices which are responsible for the loss of vision and he gave them take-home tips for looking after their eyes with the resources available.

Residents of Bamuliya & Hingoni villages extended their regards to DJJS for bringing eye care services to their village. Tulsi Ram, 65 years old from Bamuliya village shared that the eye check-up camp has helped him understand how prevention is important. He was having trouble with his right eye and was suggested by his family to get his eye checked at the camp. It turned out that he had developed cataract in his right eye. Had he not come to the camp, he would have delayed in knowing the condition of his eye.

The camp was a great success and was well conducted with the full support and cooperation of Mr Pradeep Sharma, Swami Nirmalananad ji and Swami Mahadevanand ji.
