The right to education is like all other human rights, universal and applies to everyone, irrespective of age. The aim of education include the ‘full development of the human personality and the sense of its dignity’ to ‘enable all persons to participate effectively in a free society’. Developing literacy and numeracy skills is one of the many reasons to
re-enter education in adulthood which also gives individuals the ability to reach their full potential.
With this vision, Manthan Sampoorn Vikas Kendra (SVK), the holistic education initiative of DJJS, has been passionately working towards increasing literacy levels across India, taking care of all age groups by utilizing varied methods of learning. Part of this initiative is Syahi (Adult Literacy Centres), a project aimed to educate the adult population of India which has been deprived of the chance in their childhood.
In this light, and considering the restrictions COVID-19 has brought upon us, Online Signature Camps (Hastaakshar Shivir) are being organised on a pan-India level for beneficiaries to learn writing alphabets, basic words and numbers. The recent 21-day long Camp was held from 2nd-24nd January 2022. Around fifty women from DJJS Gorakhpur branch of Uttar Pradesh participated in the camp, with utmost dedication and fervour. They were introduced to letters, basic numbers, phonetics, the concept of telling time on clocks, bus numbers, house numbers etc. They were also taught to write their names in English and Hindi. Simple and interesting teaching-learning methods were used by the teachers and volunteers.
The learning module and structure in these camps is aimed at promoting self-reliance among the participants. Participants were given everyday home assignments, in order to build self-learning practice in them. Towards the conclusion of the camp, an evaluation test was also conducted to examine their learning abilities. On the concluding day of the camp, all the beneficiaries were congratulated for their successful endeavour and distributed Certificates.
