These words of Mahatma Gandhi behold a deep meaning in defining the future of our planet. Consumerist, self- centred thought process in the past has led us to the current day devastating environmental destiny. If we continue with the same thought process the future is dark. However, the power of changing the destiny lies in our thoughts. His holiness Shri Ashutosh Maharaj Ji, Head and founder of Divya Jyoti Jagrati Sansthan and true Conservationist, cites, “Greening the thought process lies central to a greener prospering planet.”
Envisioning a greener future for the earth, DJJS My Earth My Responsibility Nature Conservators took to the famous Sec 17 Plaza in Chandigarh to sensitize daily shoppers about their environmental responsibility. Hundreds of people, some out on shopping and others hanging out with friends gathered to witness the thought- provoking nukad natak on the theme ‘Humari City Beautiful Chandigarh’ performed by DJJS Nature Conservators.
Smile, tension, concern, inquisitiveness, astonishment were the various emotions which painted the faces of the spectators as the play unfolded. The special quiz on ‘Basics of Chandigarh’ included in the play was a hit with the audience. For every correct answer the winners were given a green sapling trophy encouraging them to proactively shoulder their environmental responsibility.
Appreciating the initiative a bystander commented, “This performance actually gave me an insight into my own thought process and behaviour while using earth’s resources. I now realize how ignorant I have been in my action”.
The play was followed by an insightful talk on ‘My environmental responsibility for shaping environmentally responsible Chandigarh’ by Sadhvi Kanwal Bharti, ascetic disciple of His Holiness Shri Ashutosh Maharaj Ji, founder and head of Divya Jyoti Jagrati Sansthan. In her lecture Sadhvi Ji highlighted the innate connection between man and nature and how weakening of this bond leads to an environmental collapse and subsequent collapse of the planet. Motivating the audience towards pro-environmental living, she gave simple and practical tips for environmentally responsible living. Moved by the play and lecture several people gathered at the MEMR Environment responsibility Booth with queries and interest to know more. A lot of them approached MEMR Nature Conservators seeking ways in which they can become a part of the campaign.
My Earth My Responsibility Chandigarh Chapter is special in the sense that it aims to steer Chandigarh towards being a model of environmentally responsible society in India. The educated population of the city gives a great opportunity for setting up a model of sustainable living.
