May 2, 2024

To promote the importance of indigenous cow breeds and traditional cattle rearing practices, Kamdhenu Gaushala in collaboration with DJJS, organized ‘Desi Gaupalan Training Camp’ from April 6th to 8th, 2024, at Nurmahal, Punjab. The primary objective of the camp was to educate participants on the fundamentals of ‘Desi Gaupalan’, focusing on breed identification, nutrition management, and disease treatment for indigenous cows. DJJS representative and disciple of His Holiness Ashutosh Maharaj Ji (Founder & Head, DJJS), Swami Chinmayanand Ji, delivered an enlightening speech on the profound significance of cows in Indian culture. The major highlight of the camp was increased advocacy and awareness about the economic, environmental, and cultural significance of ‘Desi Gaupalan’, fostering greater adoption of traditional cattle rearing practices.

During the 3-day camp, representatives from various gaushalas were provided with in-depth knowledge on identifying and selecting indigenous cow breeds suitable for desi Gaupalan practices. Swami Chinmayanand Ji emphasized the sacred status of cows in Indian culture, tracing back to ancient traditions and scriptures. He highlighted the cow's revered position as a symbol of purity, motherhood, and abundance, deeply ingrained in the fabric of Indian society.

DJJS representative placed emphasis on understanding physical characteristics and behavioural traits unique to each cow breed, enabling participants to make informed decisions during cattle acquisition. Attendees learned about the specific dietary requirements of indigenous cattle and received practical guidance on formulating balanced diets using locally available resources. This included insights into grazing techniques, supplementary feeding, and the use of dietary supplements to ensure optimal health and productivity.

Drawing upon Hindu scriptures, DJJS representative invoked the image of Lord Krishna as the ultimate protector and nurturer of cows. Swami JI underscored the deep-rooted cultural significance of cows in Indian society and the timeless wisdom embodied in the teachings of Lord Krishna. He urged attendees to follow the example set by Lord Krishna and embrace a lifestyle centred on cow protection and welfare. He emphasized the importance of treating cows with love, respect, and care, not only as a religious duty but also as a means to uphold environmental sustainability and ethical living.

The camp also provided comprehensive instructions on preventing and treating common ailments affecting desi cows. Participants were equipped with the skills to identify symptoms of various diseases and implement preventive measures effectively. Expert guidance on traditional remedies for maintaining the well-being of indigenous cows was also provided.

To conclude, ‘Desi Gaupalan Training Camp’ proved to be a valuable platform for promoting sustainable cattle rearing practices and preserving indigenous cow breeds. By imparting essential knowledge and skills to participants, the camp contributed to the empowerment of individuals and communities engaged in Desi Gaupalan activities, thereby facilitating the continued prosperity of traditional cattle rearing practices.
