Salutations to the Holy Guru! djjs blog

Unquestionably, each one of us is well familiar with the terms– motherhood, fatherhood, sisterhood, brotherhood, etc. But, can you name a relationship, which encompasses all of them… i.e. love and affection of a mother, guidance of a father, companionship of a brother/sister/ friend… that too to the utmost level of perfection? Well, that's Guru-hood! Yes, the relationship of a Guru and a disciple. That's why it is proclaimed aloud in our scriptures:

Tvamevamata cha pita tvameva
Tvamevabandhushchasakhatvameva
Tvamevavidyadravinamtvameva
Tvamevasarvam mama-dev-deva

You truly are my mother, my father, my brother, and my friend. You truly are the knowledge, my real wealth. You are everything for me. You are my God .

This verse verily refers to the fact that the zenith of motherhood, fatherhood, brotherhood/ sisterhood, friendship– all are expressed by one and only, the Sadguru! It is only a Sadguru (a True Guru) who fulfils all these roles in toto for a disciple. He cares for the disciple to the maximum; his guidance is supreme and his unconditional support is present at “all” times and in all phases of life. YoganandaParamahansa says, “I can think of no relationship in this world greater than that which I had with my Master.”

The fundamental basis of this relationship, which takes it ahead of all the bonds in the world, lies in the revelation of the Supreme

Truth by the Guru in the innermost chambers of a disciple's heart. On attaining this knowledge, a disciple gets to discover what's, why's, and how's of his life. In fact, he gets to discover his life itself! This knowledge relieves him of the clutches of ignorance, which otherwise tend to make him fall in pain and troubles, and blesses him with bliss and divinity. In ShrimadBhagwatam, Jadabharata reveals to king Rahugan: "O Rahugan! One cannot attain this Supreme Knowledge by performing penance, sacrifices, renunciation, scriptural reading, or worshipping deities of water, fire, or the sun. But, when the dust from the feet of a True Guru sprinkles on our heads, then we can surely attain this knowledge."

For such a Guru and the knowledge that he blesses his disciples with, AdiShankaracharya says:

Guror-adhikamtattvamna
Guror-adhikamtapah
Tattva-gyanat-paramnasti
tasmaiShriGuraveNamah

There is no higher truth than the Guru, no higher penance than (service to) the Guru, and there is nothing higher than realisation of the Knowledge of the truth imparted by the Guru. Salutations to such a Gurudev, who is himself that very timeless truth.

In the glory of such Masters, our scriptures say:

GururbrahmaGururvishnu
GururdevoMaheshwaraha
GurursaakshaatParambrahman
tasmaishriguravenamaha

The Guru is Brahma (the Creator), Vishnu (the Preserver), and Mahesha (Shiva, the Destroyer). Veneration to the Guru who is none other than God Himself in the manifested form!

Indeed, the one who shows God within can be none other than God Himself, manifested in human garb on this mortal plane! And, certainly, the one who becomes fortunate to enrich his life with the invaluable jewel of the Supreme Lord, his heart will offer countless salutations in the lotus feet of his Master. Because he knows that what his Guru has blessed him with, it cannot be paid back! There is nothing with which he can recompense his Guru's debt!

That's why a disciple sings the glory of his Guru and worships him with each and every breath. He cannot stop himself from telling the whole world that he has got a living embodiment of God in the form of his Sadguru!

In the honour of the Sadgurus, a day is marked exclusively on the calendar, to be celebrated on the full moon day in the month of Ashadh every year, as an auspicious occasion of Guru Purnima. It is said that the disciples of sage VedVyasa initiated this sacred tradition. That's why this occasion is also known by the name VyasaPurnima, celebrated in remembrance and veneration to sage VedVyasa.

The holy festival of Guru Purnima is a day of immense significance for the spiritual disciples to re-boost their enthusiasm, determination, and devotion on the path shown by the revered Master! A day to re-kindle the feeling of steadfastness in following the commandments of the Spiritual Master! A day to promise oneself that no single breath will go in vain without colouring itself in the Holy Name of the Divine Lord!

Indeed, it's also a precious day for the non-initiated ones to ignite the flame of inquisitiveness in their heart, so that they can gather the fortune and cherish the divine ambience of their enlightened inner world! May your life-chariot be steered and bridled by a Perfect Master-like charioteer who can take you to your real and higher goal of life…

On the auspicious occasion of Guru PurminaMahotsava, Akhand Gyan along with the entire Divya Jyoti family wishes you all bountiful blessings of His Holiness AshutoshMahara jJi.
