Your Honor! djjs blog

Today, in the dock (witness box), we have Mr. Swet, Management Trainee,
MNO Softechs Ltd, under section FOB (Flattery of Boss).

On the Judge's seat: CHANAKYA

Judge's Profile: A Perfect Saint of Medieval India, well known for his sharp power of discrimination.

Me Lord! Mr. Swet joined MNO Softechs eight months back. Right from day one, he had been looking for some easy shortcuts to get quick promotion. Mr. Swet carefully analysed the proceedings of the Company and came to understand that if his Boss clears his file, then come what may, the CEO's signatures are ensured and his promotion is done. Reason - it was apparently the Company's policy that 'What Boss accepts, the CEO never rejects.' Hence, began the planning…

Day and night, just one thought rolled over in his mind again and again – 'I have to be in the good books of my Boss!'…He, thus, kept a constant eye on his Boss - read his likes and dislikes, and after a thorough study, the conclusion drawn was: “Flattery”! The sure-shot way! Mr. Swet deduced that - Promotion means Boss' happiness, which, in turn, means 'flattery'! So, what next?? …The chapter of flattery began. One day…

Mr. Swet: Good Morning, Sir!

Boss: Morning Swet…

Mr. Swet: Sir, the file you gave to me yesterday - I completed that file yesterday itself… As was told, I checked all the budget calculations and also rectified the errors.

Boss: But Swet, when did you do all that? I gave you the file at 5 pm and the office closes at 6 O' clock…

Mr. Swet: Sir, yesterday I stayed till late in the office… You said that the file is urgent; so, I decided to complete it, thinking that it may then be dispatched on time for further proceedings…

Boss: Good Swet, I am happy to see your sincerity towards work. Keep it up!

But, Your Honor, Mr. Swet had lied to his Boss that he checked the budget calculations and also rectified the errors… Though he stayed till late, but he worked over the file for only 20 minutes – that too just flipping through the pages without checking them properly. The rest of the time, Mr. Swet was playing games on his computer. Whereas, Mr. Swet very well knew that his little carelessness can result in a big loss to the Company! Not just that, Me Lord, to win the heart of his Boss,    Mr. Swet, then, took to the wrong means of flattery. See how…

Mr. Swet: Sir, if I remember correctly, you were supposed to shift in your new house yesterday…  Sir, if I can be of any help, then please do tell me…

Boss: (the moment he heard these words) O Swet, you remembered that! Thanks for your concern… Most of it is done. Only some tits-bits are left. I have to hunt around for some good carpenter to get those pending tasks done!

Mr. Swet: Sir, if you say, I can ask the carpenter who worked at our flat… he did the job really well… has a good command over his work.

Boss: So nice of you, Swet! It would really be a big help to me!

Mr. Swet: My pleasure, Sir! I will tell that man to meet you today itself in the evening… (After a pause)… and Sir, I had to ask one more thing…

Boss (smilingly): Yes Swet… Say…

Mr. Swet: Sir, last week I talked to you regarding my promotion… I showed you this file of mine…

Boss: Ya, Ya … You do one thing – leave this file with me; I will see to it!

Mr. Swet: Thank you very much, Sir!

And, Me Lord, in this manner, crushing the moral principles and values, Mr. Swet took to flattery and telling lies…

Your Honour, I would say that Mr. Swet should be given a strict punishment for the contempt of Human Values' law!

CHANAKYA'S JUDGEMENT

Wisdom says…

Stabdhmanjlikarmanaa…..                                 Murkham chhandonuvrittein                         yatharthtwavein panditam

Meaning, if someone is stubborn, then dealing with him politely to get the things done is not wrong. There is no harm in satisfying (to some extent) the mental tastes of a crazy person who is not ready to budge from his point…

Likewise, if a little bit of sycophancy can let open the door to a successful career or can prove fruitful in your progress, then there is absolutely no harm in that. But, yes, one thing should be taken care of that if resorting to such means results in any kind of loss to the firm/office or to some person in particular, then it is always prohibited in the eyes of wisdom! In such cases, always speak the truth. And, if you think that speaking truth will spoil the situation, then better keep quiet. Have patience till the things take the right shape.

In this case, Mr. Swet's flattering of his Boss cannot be adjudged as the contempt of Court. But, definitely, he deserves punishment for his casual approach towards the work assigned to him and, thereafter, telling a lie, which could result in a big loss to the Company!
