Resolute towards sustainable living, Divya Jyoti Jagrati Sansthan (DJJS) is all set to install Punjab’s first ever underground Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) in its Nurmahal Ashram campus. On 7 Jan 2018, with the traditional Indian bhoomi pujan ritual, the Sansthan started the construction of its 12,00,000KLD capacity plant aimed at efficient waste water management within the ashram premises. The recycled water from the plant would be used in irrigating Sansthan’s Hitkari Kheti farms- DJJS model of low budget organic farming as well as cleaning of DJJS Kamdhenu Gaushala and desi cows therein .
Ever-rising footfall of devotees in the ashram contributed to growing water resource pressure, both in terms of water demand and waste water production. With the aim of solving the issue of growing sewage, DJJS was looking for a treatment method which would be odour free and yet efficient enough to treat large amounts of waste water. Bearing this in mind, underground Sewage treatment plant was seen as the perfect method catering both the requirements.
Underground Sewage treatment plants are quite common in the West, where treatment plants are mandatory with any new colonization. However, the methodology is quite new in India, with only a couple of underground plants installed in Mumbai and Ahmedabad. Bearing the population growth scenario and urbanization trends of the country these underground STPs behold a great opportunity for better water management.
Just as the DJJS Kamdhenu gaushala and Hitkari Kheti, this upcoming underground sewage treatment plant would serve as another pro- environmental model motivating masses on the path of sustainable living. The plant is scheduled to be ready by April 2018. In addition, owing to the dipping groundwater levels, DJJS is simultaneously working on installing 20lakhlitre capacity rainwater harvesting system for harnessing the rainwater.
DJJS under the banner of its Nature Conservation Program- Sanrakshan, has been consistently working towards sensitizing and steering masses on the path of sustainable living. Through concerted awareness generation projects, celebrating cause- based days and undertaking action based projects Sansthan has motivated thousands of children, women and men and youth to shoulder their environmental responsibility.
