An insight into the value of extending selfless service to society was explained at the recent Monthly Spiritual Congregation, organised by DJJS on 5th December, 2021 at Jodhpur, Rajasthan. During these turbulent times of global pandemic, everyone is struggling to be happy & content from within but is unable to do so, due to unruly circumstances. Driven by the senses, the minds are not at peace as we are living with a constant fear of insecurity, greed, jealousy & rejection of all kinds. We are seeking solitude & salvation but are lacking the basic knowledge of spirituality & extending selfless service to society for the betterment of all. It seems that we have lost the thread that binds the mankind together. Under such circumstances, these monthly, spiritual congregations act as a saviour as they enlighten the masses with the real essence of selflessness, bhakti (devotion), and global peace.

The event started with the chanting of Vedic hymns, followed by motivational discourses and devotional bhajans. They lifted the dying spirit, thereby providing energy to our drained lives. As the event progressed, the learned preachers of DJJS further explained the value of extending selfless service to society for the overall improvement of every human being by quoting instances from Mahabharata. They explained how Pitamah Bhishma who renounced the post of King and took the vow of celibacy, but this sacrifice of Bhishma did no good. This sacrifice made him fall into the shackles of serving the throne (Kauravas). Life of Karna was also full of contradictions. He was Daanveer (one who donates) but befriended Duryodhana and was always envious of Arjuna. He was all powerful like Bhishma & Drona but chose to support adharma. Dronacharya was a selfless teacher who would do teaching without charging money; but Ashwatthama, his son was his biggest weakness and Drona’s love for his son deviated him from the path of righteousness. Eventually he silently supported all maligned activities of Duryodhana.

These self-explanatory stories convey that though they were Dharmik (religious) but ended up supporting Adharma. They were led by their senses and uncontrolled mind only. They made great sacrifices, but suffered as all their endeavours were to support Adharma. Their deeds did no good for the society, rather it brought doom for all.

The situations remain same over ages, only the characters change. We also do good things but with a vested interest. Only a true Brahm Gyani (the one initiated into the supreme science of Self Realisation) knows the power of selfless love & service, and how it can change the degraded social situation. Only a Perfect Master (Divya Guru) can enlighten a soul (like Krishna enlightened Arjuna). Only Sadhana (Meditation on the Divine Light of the Self) can control our mind & thoughts. A devotee should selflessly, truly, and completely surrender to his Guru and should be ready to accept all challenges thrown at his/her way. Any opportunity of Sewa (service) should be willingly accepted by a Sewak because only then he/she would be able to absorb the teachings from the Guru and make this world a better place.

These spiritual congregations have always proved to be a powerhouse of spirituality, explaining the significance of being selfless, along with throwing light on the true meaning of Bhakti and the significance of the Perfect Master, who is the only one to guide us on this path of Self-Awakening & Righteousness.
