BODH - the drug abuse eradication program of Divya Jyoti Jagrati Sansthan conducted a one day workshop at Men’s Jail, Meerut in Uttar Pradesh. The aim of the program was to sensitize the non users, even from the first use of drugs and also to motivate the users (addicts/dependents) to break the cycle of addiction through the instrumentality of ‘Dhyan therapy’ – the vital part of psychoanalytical module of the organization.

Considering the facts and studies conducted on prison settings in India, almost 45% of the prison population is dependent upon the abuse of one or the other substance, of which, 82% are alcoholics. Likewise, substance abuse is significantly higher among the prisoners (under trails) than the convicted ones. On the other hand, addressing the issue promptly, Sadhvi Lokesha Bharti ji, an expert on the subject and disciple of His Holiness Shri Ashutosh Maharaj ji, founder and head of Divya Jyoti Jagrati Sansthan , illustrated upon the necessity and the possibility of both, prevention  of drug abuse and treatment  of the addicts, in greater detail. ‘CHOOSE LIFE, NOT DRUGS’, was the message, she propagated to all the participants, in a very unique style, through an eye opening skit, educative engagement activities, optimistic lecture and slide presentation.

Emphasizing on the significance of value based education in the prison settings, in order to achieve the sustainability of the efforts made, Sadhvi ji further said that drug abuse is a complex phenomenon, which has various social, cultural, biological, geographical, historical and economic aspects. In which case, the sentimentality behind how ‘one’s addiction doesn’t affect the society’, is in itself a myth.

Similarly, the detrimental impact of drug abuse at the global level was the key point, in the second part of her lecture. Through demonstrations and calculations she showed how one’s abuse leads to national income deficit, hike in the cost incurred in national health services, increase of crime rate at work places, households viz a viz domestic violence, divorce cases, impulsive murders, assaults, rape cases etc. “With most drug users being in the productive age group of 18-35 years, the loss in terms of human potential is incalculable. The damage to the physical, psychological, moral and intellectual growth of the youth is very high”, proclaimed Sadhvi ji.

She also screened a documentary on BODH - the drug abuse eradication program of DJJS, showcasing the psychoanalytical module of the organization, which has given respite to lakhs of people across the globe from the menace of drug abuse. Two of the testimonies were also shared. In this way, the prisoners and the authority in an entirety, got inspired and also appreciated the content and concept of the workshop at the end.
