But, a few centuries back, in India, aspiring students would go to a Gurukul to stay with their Guru for the purpose of acquiring gross as well as Divine Knowledge. …The Guru nurtured these young, fragile minds with fathomless love and competent knowledge, and ensured them his divine protection against the evils lurking in society. Strict discipline was observed by the students while staying at the holy feet of their revered Guru, which provided the foundation to their meaningful future life.
About 2200 years ago, an incident took place. This is a true incident. Maharishi Patanjali, a revered Guru in the Indian yoga tradition, was imparting knowledge to hundreds of his students who were par excellence and got a lot of attention from the Guru and there were students who were average and would get just enough attention from the Guru. Pushyamitra was a student with average intelligence and average work capacity, so average… so ordinary. He would always look at the extraordinary students of Maharishi and think, “Would I ever be able to make my guru as proud as they do? ...
Days and years rolled by… Finally, the day came when the students had to leave the Gurukul as their education was complete. Maharishi had made them competent enough to face the challenges of life, by adorning them with the weapons of knowledge and spirituality. …
Everybody except Pushyamitra seemed satisfied and content. Every beat of his heart was looking deep into Maharishi’s eyes searching for that proud feeling towards himself … But, no… nothing!! Yes, Maharishi did look at Pushyamitra, but it was an emotionless, idle look, as if he was looking at a lifeless object! ...
… As soon as he turned to go away from his Guru, he heard something!! A few words from Maharishi himself…… which were meant for no one else but Pushyamitra!! Maharishi said, “My child, keep your desire alive!!”
