The Power to Choose!

Choice is a part of life! True! Not just that; it’s also the art of life! Every day, we are surrounded by options, which come to challenge our decision-making abilities. As per one of the studies by Cornell University, an adult makes about 70 decisions a day. However, many a times, we are not able to utilize our power of making a choice, which is exclusively gifted to human beings by God.

Alex Haley, the writer of “Roots” mentions in his book that after slavery was abolished in the U.S, a strange thing happened. The newly-released slaves were perplexed as to what to do with their freedom. Alex says, perhaps their ‘choice-making pulse’ was not developed. Due to lack of making a proper choice, what those prisoners did after they were released? The majority of them returned to their masters and continued to work for them for the rest of their lives!

On somewhat similar lines, was based the story of Brookes, the character of one of the famous Hollywood movies- ‘The Shawshank Redemption’. Brookes was a prison librarian, who was an inmate for 50 long years. After 50 years, he was released from the jail and set free. But, Brooks did not know how to implement his power of choice and utilize his freedom. To him, the freedom appeared so overwhelming that… he committed suicide!
