Jalandhar: Discrimination against girls in a developing country like India is a devastating reality evidencing several indicators of the sorry state of affairs. A girl born in family is still deprived of the exclamation and joy that a newly born male child gets inherent. One step forward in its ongoing drive to institute Gender Equality, DJJS under the banner of Santulan conducted a workshop with the students and staff of Hans Raj Institute of Nursing on December 9, 2014 in the city of Punjab, the place that witnesses maximum beneficiaries through Santulan Campaign 2010-11 in terms of valuing girl child. The renowned educational institution prioritizes gender equality and is known for imparting education particularly to women folk and playing a pivotal role in their status uplifting.

Your attitude on birth of your girl child decides her future

The program began with the welcome of DJJS panel members with flowers. It was followed by a sensitizing lecture by Sadhvi Om Prabha Bharti Ji, highlighting the importance of girl child and exacerbation of society due to gender discrimination and lopsided sex ratios. On being questioned by a teacher, better termed as curious attendee, as to why previously enacted measures against sex-selective abortion have failed and what measures may work in the future, Sadhvi ji punctuated self-realization as the integral necessity to awaken the dormant consciousness, change of corrupt mindsets and hence, overcome all forms of Gender based disparities. The idea behind conducting the workshop with girls was to inculcate a sense of self-worth and rub the innate subordination among them.

Preventing future sex-selective abortions will require an incremental approach. Santulan, under the stewardship of Shri Ashutosh Maharaj Ji is using its distinct technique of soul awakening and aims at bringing about mental and social transformation in gender perspective at the grass root level.
