In the light of the deteriorating environmental health of the city beautiful, Divya Jyoti Jagriti Sansthan organized a ‘Green City Walkathon’ on 22 Oct 2017.Around 500 DJJS Nature Conservators including men, women and children came together under the banner of DJJS Nature conservation Program Sanrakshan to jolt the residents out of their inertia and set them on the path of sustainable living.

Eminent personalities of the city namely, Shri K.C. Puri (Head of Jatt Arakshan Claims Commission at Haryana Govt. & Former Judge Punjab & Haryana High Court, Chd.); Shri Anurag Aggarwal (Home Secretary, Chd.); Shri Baldev Raj Mahajan (Advocate General, Haryana); Shri Sanjay Tandon (BJP State President, Chd.); Smt. Asha Jaswal (Mayor, Chd.); Shri Devi Singh (District President BJP); Shri. Pardeep Kumar (BJP Mandal President); Dr. N.M.Gupta (Ex. Professor, PGI); Sh. Gurpreet Singh Dhillon (M.C. Sec-32,46, Chandigarh), Sh. Mohammad Khurshid (M.C.), Sh. Sachin Lotia (M.C.); Sh. Jagtar Singh (M.C.); Sh. Shaktidev Shali (M.C.), Sh. Mahesh Inder Singh Sidhu (M.C.); Sh. Jatinder Bhatia (Ex. Balwinder Singh (President Market Association, Sec 46, Chd) joined the walkathon to mark their support for the cause and flagged off the rally from Shri Sanatan Dharm Mandir, Sec -32 D, Chandigarh.

Before the flag off, a special event was organised at the starting point, where Swami Gurukirpanand Ji, DJJS Chandigarh branch coordinator and ascetic disciple of His Holiness Ashutosh Maharaj Ji furthering the intent of the initiative informed the guests and audience that, “Environment is a shared resource hence its maintenance is the responsibility of each and every individual, and unfortunately often we forget our responsibility towards environment. Thus, this walkathon is an effort to sensitize and awaken the residents towards their due responsibility for environment.”

The Hon’ble guests called upon the masses to take responsibility of environment conservation and begin with small and simple initiatives like tree plantation, tree maintenance, water conservation, energy conservation to maintain the health of the city and overall ecosystem.

Various environmental problems like water conservation, electricity conservation, tree plantation and sustainable living were highlighted in the rally using various tools. Children dressed as trees and flowers, urged the onlookers to save and maintain the greenery of the city beautiful. Motivated by this troupe of selfless nature conservators walking the streets of Chandigarh on Sunday afternoon, many residents came forward and pledged to shoulder their environmental responsibility.

The initiative as a whole and the selfless spirit of the nature conservators to spread the message of conservation received appreciation from one and all.
