The term ‘Independence’ literally encompasses terms like self-reliance, freedom, liberty, clutch-free and many more positives. India is said to have been awarded with aforesaid independence long back, however, the reality refuses to agree, as there exists a section of people, aka ‘women’, whose struggle for independence is incessant. Divya Jyoti Jagrati Santhan (DJJS) under the divine stewardship of its founder and head, His Holiness Shri Ashutosh Maharaj ji, has taken lead to help women re-attain their lost glory and share of independence through its Gender Equality Program-‘Santulan’, and is thus carrying out sensitizing campaigns every year under the theme ‘Lets Recall Their Sacrifice’. This 73rd independence day made an addition to that count of campaigns with the objective to highlight the forgotten and understated contribution of women freedom fighters in the struggle for independence.

Independence Day 2019 celebration with Santulan: It’s time to remember Women Freedom Fighters

The day was commemorated from August 15 to August 25, 2019 by means of an assortment of awareness initiatives by female volunteers of Santulan program. Patriotic walks were organized wherein, women participants tramped with masks of women freedom fighters, Rani of Jhansi, Sarojini Naidu, Bhikaji Cama, Matangini Hazra to name a few, and placards with slogans encouraging women to continue the battle of independence from all invisible shackles of discrimination, age-old prejudices and gender based stereotypes.

Sensitizing events & workshops in schools, colleges, public places and different institutions were organized as a tribute to female freedom fighters, to put forward the potential and accomplishments of women, which are otherwise subjugated. Theses workshops comprised of dance ballet infusing patriotism, followed by awakening skit on Rani Lakshmibai to showcase her potential, fearless battle and martyrdom. Lecture discussing the bravery and unforgettable tales of female martyrs also formed part of these workshops along with various enlightening & conscious-awakening activities.

The vision behind the campaign is remembrance of sacrifices & commendable inputs of those female freedom fighters who, against all odds & hurdles, came forward as patriots and got the nation freed from foreign rule. Approach of ‘Being balanced is an independence’ was followed throughout to empower women to realize their innate strength & self-worth and participate in all social and political roles, which have been made limited to males only. Emphasis is being laid on letting those medieval mind-sets against women go and no more perceive them as preservation of culture. The count of beneficiaries under this campaign is increasing rapidly, signalling change in time to come.
